A space where the architectural beauty of Tadao Ando meets the artistry of Tsuguharu Foujita

The Akita Museum of Art was established to exhibit the valuable artworks collected by the late Masayoshi Hirano. Notably, many works by the world-renowned painter Tsuguharu Foujita, who had a close friendship with Hirano, are on display. Among them, the large mural “Festivals of Akita” is a must-see. This mural, measuring 365 by 2050 cm, depicts the seasonal festivals of Akita and stands as a symbol of the museum.

The museum building itself is also one of the highlights. Designed by Tadao Ando, one of Japan’s leading architects, the building features a simple yet sophisticated design. The exhibition spaces, which skillfully incorporate natural light, are designed to provide a pleasant viewing experience for visitors. Additionally, the museum has a café where you can relax and enjoy your time after viewing the exhibitions.

At the Akita Museum of Art, in addition to the permanent exhibits, various planned and special exhibitions are held, offering new discoveries with each visit and making it a place you’ll want to return to again and again. Not only can you appreciate the works of Tsuguharu Foujita, but also those of a diverse range of artists from Japan and abroad, allowing you to enjoy a broad spectrum of artistic expression.
