Cherry Blossom Trees at Tonicho

In an effort to revive the area of Tonicho after the damage caused by the 1933 Sanriku tsunami, 2,800 Yoshino cherry trees were planted.
Of those trees, those at Tonicho's Honkyo Sakura Avenue have gained a significant amount of popularity.
Every year, from mid to late April, the sakura begin to bloom.
Once every 3 years, what's known colloquially as the Sakura Festival takes place.
This grand occasion sees the transferral of the sacred mikoshi of the Amaterasu Mioya Shrine.
During the festival the daimyo procession parades through the streets under the blooming sakura.
The next festival is to be held in 2021.
Even without the festival however this is a great spot to enjoy a nice, quiet walk around Kamaishi in the springtime.
