Okunoin is the site of the mausoleum of Kobo Daishi (also known as Kukai).
It is one of the most sacred places in Japan and a popular pilgrimage spot..
Instead of having died, it is believed that Kobo Daishi is still meditating here, wishing for peace and happiness for all people..
The two kilometre approach to the mausoleum is lined with cedars hundreds of years old and more than 200,000 gravestones of people from all walks of life, from the imperial family and feudal lords to literati and commoners.
