A Historic Landmark Symbolizing Toride’s Post Town Heritage

The Mito Kaidō road connected Senju with Mito, and Toride was the sixth post town from Senju.
At the center of the town stood the Toride Honjin, known today as the Somenoke House, a historic residence that reflects Toride’s prosperity as a post town.
During the Edo period (1603-1868), the era of the samurai, this honjin was used by feudal lords for lodging and rest, and it still preserves much of the atmosphere of that era, making it one of Toride’s most important cultural landmarks.
