A 1,600-Year-Old Sacred Zelkova Tree

Within the grounds of Kogenji Temple stands the Jizo Keyaki, a majestic zelkova tree estimated to be about 1,600 years old.
Designated as a Natural Monument of Ibaraki on March 6, 1939, it is one of Toride’s most treasured natural landmarks.
At the base of its massive trunk, a hollow shelters a statue of the Koyasu Jizo Bodhisattva, revered as a guardian of safe childbirth and child-rearing.
Because of this, many people visit to pray for blessings for their families and children.
This rare combination of ancient natural heritage and living faith makes the Jizo Keyaki a unique symbol of Toride’s cultural and spiritual landscape.
