Historical Marudai-Ogiya Merchant House

The Historical Marudai-Ogiya Merchant Hous is an old trading house in which we can learn about the lifestyles of local people living here from the end of the Edo period (1603-1863) through the Meiji (1868-1912) and Taisho (1912-1926).
There is a beautiful house with a thatched roof and kurazashiki (tatami rooms in a storehouse), and a garden where water and trees are beautifully arranged.
It presents a lifestyle suited for Nagai’s climate, shown by things such as the “Irekawado”, which is a washing place in the compound created by drawing water from a channel flowing through the town.
