Sengawa Arts and Culture course

Chofu city is also known as a city of arts and culture.
Along the walking course starting from Tsutsuji-gaoka Station to Senkawa Station, there are Jourakuin Temple, for which Tetsumaro Honda-a composer of "Omoide-no-Album" that is a standard number for graduation ceremonies at nursery schools and kindergartens in Japan-served as a chief priest, and a private residence of Saneatsu Mushanokoji, a famous literary person who actively created his works from the Meiji (1868-1912) to Showa eras.





Course information

(A) Tsutsuji-gaoka Station


An area surrounding Tsutsuji-gaoka Station is a quiet residential area.
On the southeast side of the area, there is Saneatsu Park, where there used to be a private house of a writer and artist Saneatsu Mushanokoji in which he lived in his last years.


(B) Jorakuin (Monument of "Omoide-no-album")


On the precinct of the temple stands the monument of "Omoide-no-album."
“Omoide-no-album” is used as a melody signaling incoming trains at Tsutsuji-gaoka Station.

(C) Myoshoin Temple


Benzaiten enshrined in Kannon-do Hall is one of seven gods of good fortune in Chofu as the goddess of beauty.

(E) Mushakoji Saneatsu Memorial Museum・(F) Saneatsu Park


Mushakoji Saneatsu launched a magazine called "Shirakaba".
As a main figure for its novelist group, he achieved great success in a variety of fields, including literature, art, thinking and theatrical plays from the Meiji era to the Showa era.
Saneatsu spent 20 years of his later life in Chofu until he died at the age of 90.
After his death, a memorial park was opened at his place of residence to celebrate his accomplishments, and then, next to the park, a memorial hall was opened.

(G) Sengawa Theatre


Sengawa Theatre is a municipal theatre build in 2008 by Mr. Tadao Ando, the world-renowned architect.

(I) Sengawa Station


The street along which buildings designed by Tadao Ando, a Japanese self-taught architect and the winner of the 1995 Pritzker Prize, are lined up is popular as a base for creating and sending out culture and arts.
