Japan’s only museum dedicated to contemporary Jomon art

Inofurai Art Museum, also known as the Niimi City Hoso Ceramics Museum, focuses on contemporary Jomon art.
It is described as Japan’s only museum dedicated to this field, and its displays feature landmark works by Inofurai and Genya Murakami, alongside “Jomon Hoso” pieces that fuse local Hoso ware with Jomon aesthetics, plus a variety of Jomon pattern designs.
Beyond the core collection, the museum presents the ethos of “designs of life and soul,” often called Jomon Spiral Art.
You’ll also find works with Spanish-style luster glaze, paintings, and plant-dyed handwoven textiles.
In addition to year-round exhibits, special exhibitions are held periodically to highlight diverse Jomon-inspired artists, and the museum hosts the Jomon Open-Air Firing Festival twice a year (around April and October).
