Applications for the Katsuragi City Wanpaku Sumo Tournament have closed. Thank you for your applications.

The Katsuragi City Wanpaku Sumo Tournament will be held on Saturday, July 4, 2026, at Katsuragi City Sumo Museum “Kehaya-za.”

A hands-on sumo experience for preschool children will also be offered on the day. Katsuragi City, Nara Prefecture, is known as the birthplace of sumo, and this event offers children an opportunity to experience sumo in a welcoming setting.

Eligibility

1. Wanpaku Sumo Tournament

Elementary and junior high school students who live in Katsuragi City, attend school in Katsuragi City, or belong to an organization or group based in Katsuragi City.

Advance application was required.

2. Hands-on Sumo Experience

Preschool children are welcome to join.

There are no residency restrictions. No advance application is required, and participants may join on the day of the event.

Applications had to be submitted by the deadline.

Number of Participants

There is no limit on the number of participants.

Tournament Format

All events will be held as individual tournament matches.

The format may be changed depending on the number of participants.

Categories:

  • Lower Elementary School Division: Grades 1 to 3
  • Upper Elementary School Division: Grades 4 to 6
  • Junior High School Division

Participation Fee

Free

Participation Prize

All participating athletes will receive a participation prize and a commemorative gift.

Notes

  • Please wear clothing suitable for exercise on the day of the event.
  • There is no parking lot at the venue. If you are coming by car, please use the parking lot at Katsuragi City Hall Taima Office.
  • The organizer will provide insurance for injuries and accidents that occur during matches. First aid will be provided on site, but the organizer will not be responsible for any further treatment or related matters.
  • Each event will be held as an open category, without divisions by grade, gender, or weight.

Hands-on Sumo Experience

A hands-on sumo experience will be offered for preschool children, with no residency restrictions.

Former amateur sumo wrestlers and student sumo wrestlers will provide friendly guidance.

No previous sumo experience is required, so children are welcome to take part.

Participants can experience sumo on a dohyo ring the same size as those used in official professional sumo tournaments.
