Explore Wakasa Bay’s Sea-Carved Cliffs and Natural Arches

The Sotomo Sightseeing Boat Cruise is one of the most popular activities in Obama City, Fukui Prefecture.
This 50-minute cruise offers a close-up view of the dramatic coastal scenery of Wakasa Bay, featuring rugged cliffs, unique rock formations, and sea caves shaped by centuries of wave erosion.

“Sotomo” refers to a roughly 6-kilometer stretch of coastline on the northern edge of Obama Bay, sculpted by the relentless waves of the Sea of Japan.
Highlights include dramatic natural rock arches—Omon (“Great Gate”) and Komon (“Small Gate”)—and Shishi-no-Kuchi (“Lion’s Mouth”), a jagged split in the cliff face that resembles a lion’s open jaws.
These features, carved by the sea over centuries, appear like sculptures of nature itself.

Cruises depart from Wakasa Fisherman’s Wharf, a convenient tourist hub next to Obama Port.
On board, passengers can enjoy guided commentary explaining the formation and names of each feature while feeling the fresh sea breeze of Wakasa Bay.

The cruise operates annually from mid-March to late November, during the calmer seasons of the year.
It is a favorite among families, group travelers, and older visitors alike.
The wharf also features seafood markets, local souvenir shops, and restaurants offering freshly caught delicacies, making it a perfect spot to enjoy both sightseeing and dining in one place.
