Kairakuen Garden is one of the Three Great Gardens of Japan and is recognized as a Japan Heritage Site.
Established in 1842 by the 9th daimyo of the Mito domain, Nariaki Tokugawa, it was opened as a recreational place for the citizens.
Having 3,000 plum trees planted of about 100 different varieties, lots of tourists visit for the plum festival from mid-February to late March.
With cherry trees and azaleas in spring, Japanese bush clovers in the fall, and cherry trees blossoming in the winter too, the flowers can be enjoyed throughout the year.
