Hokusai Hidden in Uraga | Walk Through Uraga and Create The Great Wave
Hokusai Hidden in Uraga ~An Immersive Town Gallery~, a hands-on art event inspired by Katsushika Hokusai, will take place across the historic port town of Uraga from November 6 to December 20, 2026.
Presented in Japanese as 「葛飾北斎、浦賀潜伏。~体感型まちなかギャラリー~」, the event turns Uraga into an interactive town-wide gallery where visitors can view reproduction woodblock prints, learn how ukiyo-e prints are made, and take part in hands-on activities at four venues.
One of the highlights is a printmaking rally in which visitors add one color at each of the four venues. After completing all four stages, they will have created their own version of Hokusai’s famous The Great Wave off Kanagawa.
Rather than experiencing Hokusai only inside a museum, visitors can discover his work while walking through historic locations around Uraga, including a traditional house, a temple, and the historic Uraga Dock area.

Hokusai and Uraga
Katsushika Hokusai, one of Japan’s best-known ukiyo-e artists, stayed in Uraga from 1834 to 1836, when he was in his seventies. His maternal family home is said to have been in Uraga.
During the latter part of his stay, Hokusai is also known to have stayed at Shinpukuji Temple (真福寺), located a short distance from central Uraga.
This event uses the streets and historic sites of Uraga as part of the experience, allowing visitors to encounter Hokusai’s art while exploring a place connected with his later life.
Visit Four Venues and Create The Great Wave off Kanagawa

One of the main attractions is a four-stop printmaking rally.
At each venue, visitors print one additional color layer. After visiting all four locations, the layers come together to complete The Great Wave off Kanagawa.
The activity offers a hands-on way to understand how traditional ukiyo-e prints were created using multiple woodblocks and colors.
The completed print can also be turned into an original uchiwa, a traditional Japanese round fan.
See 56 Reproduction Prints in Historic Locations Around Uraga

A total of 56 works by Hokusai will be displayed across the venues, including works from Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji and Ocean of Wisdom.
The exhibits are reproduction ukiyo-e prints created by Takahashi Kobo, which carries on the tradition of Edo-period multicolor woodblock printing.
At the fourth venue, some of the reproduction prints on display will also be available for purchase.
Experience Hokusai’s Waves and Discover How Woodblock Prints Work

The event also includes interactive attractions that go beyond simply looking at the artwork.
At the first venue, an attraction using wind and paper confetti recreates the sensation of Hokusai’s dramatic waves.
At the second venue, visitors can explore a layered-panel display designed to show how multiple carved blocks and colors combine to create a finished woodblock print.
Special Hokusai Goshuin at East and West Kano Shrines

East Kano Shrine and West Kano Shrine, located on opposite sides of Uraga Port, will offer two types of Hokusai-themed goshuin, traditional shrine stamps and calligraphy.
One is an original Hokusai goshuin created to commemorate the event and is expected to remain available after the event period.
The other is a limited collaboration goshuin available to visitors with the special-benefit ticket. Each shrine will offer 300 of its collaboration goshuin design, and when the two designs are placed together, they form a single Hokusai artwork.
Availability ends once the limited supply runs out.
Explore Uraga by Ferry, Food, and Foot
The event is designed as a walk through Uraga rather than a visit to a single exhibition venue.
Along the way, visitors can cross the harbor aboard the Uraga Ferry “Uraga no Watashi”, stop for local sweets such as nerikiri, or try locally produced original beer.
Visiting the venues involves approximately 4 km of walking, and the suggested time for the full experience is around 2 to 3 hours. Comfortable walking shoes and clothing are recommended.
The Uraga Ferry fare is not included in the event ticket, and the ferry fare must be paid in cash.
