Fly! ANA Windsurfing World Cup YOKOSUKA MIURA Japan 2025 – Foil Slalom Season Finale Now Underway

From November 13 (Thu) to November 17 (Mon), 2025, the Fly! ANA Windsurfing World Cup YOKOSUKA MIURA Japan is being held at Tsukuihama Beach in Yokosuka City.

This event is the final round of the foil slalom discipline on the PWA (Professional Windsurfers Association) World Tour. The 2025 men’s and women’s foil slalom world champions will be decided here in Tsukuihama.

As the last event of the season, the results of this event in Japan directly determine the overall men’s and women’s foil slalom world titles. Because of this, the competition is drawing strong attention from windsurfing fans around the world.

What Is the PWA World Tour?

The PWA World Tour is the world’s premier professional windsurfing circuit, sanctioned and organized by the PWA. In disciplines such as slalom, wave, and freestyle, multiple events are held at locations around the globe, and the overall world champion is decided each year based on the combined results from these events.

The Yokosuka–Miura event at Tsukuihama Beach is a World Cup event focused on the foil slalom discipline.

Slalom: High-Speed Mark-Rounding Battles

Five competitors racing across the sea in the Windsurfing World Cup

Slalom is the discipline in which windsurfing’s pure speed can be felt most directly. Racers start from a line set to windward, then round a series of marks laid out to leeward and head for the finish line while competing for speed.

The race develops with an intense sense of speed, and the first mark in particular can dramatically change the order of the fleet. Close position battles and tactical moves unfold as the riders fight for the inside line. The simple and easy-to-understand rule that “whoever completes the course fastest wins” is one of the big appeals of slalom.

Foil Slalom: Formula One on the Water

Slalom competition is divided into two formats: fin slalom, where a fin is used to plane across the surface, and foil slalom, where a hydrofoil mounted under the board lifts it above the water and allows it to fly. At the Yokosuka–Miura event, only foil slalom races are held.

With foil boards, the underwater wing (hydrofoil) generates lift and raises the board above the surface, creating both high speed and a smooth, quiet feeling of flight, often described as “Formula One on the water.” In past editions of the event, races have been run even in strong winds with maximum gusts of about 20 m/s, demanding an exceptional level of skill and control from the riders.

Tournament Format and Rules

The competition is conducted in a tournament format, with the standard eight competitors per heat (group), with the top four advancing to the next heat.

In PWA races, the top ranked competitors (or the top of the previous race) are seeded and start the second and third rounds.
The final race is contested by eight riders who have advanced through the elimination ladder, including those who come through the repechage round. Multiple eliminations are run as long as conditions and time allow, and the final ranking is determined by each rider’s combined results.
