A famous peak for sunrise, seas of clouds, and star-filled skies

Mt. Tsurugi rises to 1,955 meters and is the second-highest mountain in western Japan, as well as one of Japan’s 100 Famous Mountains.
With the help of a chairlift, the upper part of the mountain is relatively easy to access, making it popular even with less experienced hikers.
From the summit area, visitors can enjoy seas of clouds, sunrise views, and brilliant star-filled skies, and on clear days the panorama can stretch as far as the Kii Peninsula, the Seto Inland Sea, and Cape Ashizuri.
“Japan’s 100 Famous Mountains” is a well-known selection of peaks regarded as representative mountains of the country, and Mt. Tsurugi is one of them.
The mountain is also tied to a legend that members of the Heike clan hid Emperor Antoku’s sword deep in the mountain after the civil wars of the late 12th century, and it has long been regarded as a sacred peak in the mountain worship tradition.
There is also lodging near the summit, allowing visitors to fully enjoy some of western Japan’s finest highland scenery.
