Jorakuji Temple浄楽寺

Jorakuji Temple

Jorakuji Temple houses five of the Buddhist images created by Unkei, Japan’s most recognized Buddhist sculptor (these images have been nationally designated as Important Cultural Property).
Known for his realistic style, Unkei is highly recognized in Europe and the U.S. and is often called "the Michelangelo of Japan."
Unkei is believed to have received the order to create the Buddhist images from Wada Yoshimori, the first director of the Samurai-dokoro of the Kamakura shogunate, and Yoshimori’s wife.
Visit this temple to take a close look at these embodiments of the prayers of samurais who lived over 830 years ago.
Viewing requires reservation.
