Juniko Lakes

Juniko consists of 33 lakes and ponds that were formed when a great earthquake hit the area in 1704, causing the valley entrance to be blocked and the ground to sink.
When viewed from midway up Mt. Kuzureyama, the small ponds are hidden in the forest, and only the 12 large lakes can be seen.
Hence the name Juniko Lakes (12 Lakes).

This spot also features Japan Canyon, large cliffs of white volcanic tuff rock that became exposed due to erosion and collapse. Japan Canyon was named in 1953 by explorer Kishi Mamoru because it is reminiscent of the Grand Canyon in the US.
