Tachikikannon Temple

Tachikikannon stands at the top a stone stairway of about eight hundred steps by Shishitobi-keikoku, a valley along Setagawa, which is the only river flowing out of Lake Biwa.
It takes about twenty minutes to climb the steps to the temple’s precincts.
The temple is said to have been founded about 1200 years ago, when the renowned priest Kukai carved a Kannon of his own height into a standing tree (“tachiki” means “standing tree” in English).
Tachiki Kannon is widely worshipped for protection against misfortune.
