Nakasendo

The Nakasendo Road is one of the five major roads built by order of Tokugawa Ieyasu* (Tokaido, Nakasendo, Nikko-kaido, Oshu-kaido, and Koshu-kaido).
The Nakasendo connecting Edo (Tokyo) and Kyoto was also called the Kiso-kaido because it passed through the mountainous Kisoji region.
*Tokugawa Ieyasu (1543-1616) was the founder and first shogun of the Tokugawa shogunate of Japan from 1603 to 1868.
