Honmarugoten of Kawagoe Castle

Kawagoe Castle’s Honmarugoten mansion was built in 1848 by Kawagoe domain’s feudal lord Matsudaira Naritsune.
Kawagoe was a domain of 170,000 koku during the Edo period (1603-1868), and the Honmarugoten was composed of sixteen wings on a land of approximately 3,388 square meters.
However, in the early-Meiji period, due to an ordinance to abolish castles, much of Honmarugoten’s buildings were taken apart and relocated, leaving only the entrance hall, the main hall, and the chief retainer’s office today.
The Honmarugoten’s main hall is an extremely valuable structure, as only here and Kochi Castle retain their Honmarugoten main halls in Japan, making this the only one in East Japan.
