Utsukushi Matsu (Beautiful Pine)

Utsukushi Matsu is scarce pine trees that only grow in clusters on the slope of Bishozan mountain.
It is said that they are varieties due to recessive heredity.
“Natural Habitat of Utsukushi Matsu in Hiramatsu,” an area where the pine grows in clusters, is designated as a national natural treasure.
Branches of the pine trees radiate out from near the bases of the pine trees.
They look like a fan or umbrella.
Legend has it that during the Heian period, when Fujiwara no Yorihira visited this place for rest, a little girl appeared and turned trees on the surrounding mountains into beautiful pine trees.
