Onigawara Tile Workshop
Craftsmen that specialise in creating 'onigawara' tiles are known as 'Onishi', and one such Onishi is Masayoshi Nishigori, whose works in the traditional Fukui art of 'Echizen Kawara' tiling can be found on display in the gallery here.
Since ancient times there has been a custom in Awara to furnish roofs with special tiles in the shape of an Oni's face to protect homes from disasters.
At this workshop you can watch Onishi (of whom there are precious few remaining in the country) apply their craft in the creation of onigawara tiles, as well as purchase some ornamental onigawaras as souvenirs.
