Watayumi Stone Monument (Watayumizuka)

This stone monument with haiku cut into it was built in 1809 to commemorate the haiku that Matsuo Basho, a famous poet from the Edo period, composed when he stayed in Takenouchi, the birthplace of his disciple Naemura Chiri.
The garden with the stone monument and a nearby traditional Japanese home have been prepared as a rest area containing documents about Basho and large cards of poetry by the famous historical writer Ryotaro Shiba.
