Chūson-ji Temple

In the late Heian period (794-1185), the Oshu Fujiwara clan, who ruled the whole of the Tohoku region established a golden age in Hiraizumi which flourished for around100 years.

Kiyohira, the first lord of Fujiwara built the Chuson-ji temple in the centre of Hiraizumi, to lay to rest the souls of those lost in war and to create a world of peace, free from conflict.

After the fall of the Fujiwara clan, many of the halls and towers were destroyed by fire, with only the Konjikido hall remaining from the original temple. Konjikido is a gilded Amida hall whose altar enshrines the Fujiwara dynasties: Kiyohira the First, Motohira the Second, Hidehira the Third, and Yasuhira the Fourth.

The gallery of treasures, Sanhira Repository, houses many Buddhist artifacts, including national treasures and important cultural properties.
