Nakatonbetsu Town Local Museum

Hokkaido is where its indigenous people, the Ainu, used to live and present-day Nakatonbetsu Town used to be one of their hunting grounds.
In 1886, the Hokkaido Prefectural Office was established and there was a proactive approach to the promotion of cultivation policies for Hokkaido, such as the selling of land to private parties, the technological development of agricultural tools, the installation of roads and railways.
As cultivation proceeded, there was a gold rush in Nakatonbetsu Town in the late 1880s, which saw a rush of people who had heard about the production of gold dust move into the area in hope of quickly making a fortune.
The prosperity of the forest industry that tells the story of the town from the first days of its cultivation and the history of the changing town development take center stage here in the museum.
