Butsuryu-ji Temple

Built by Kukai’s leading disciple Kenne, it is considered the southern gate of Murou-ji Temple.
It is said that Kukai brought back tea seeds and tea-grinding mortars from Tang (China), cultivating the seeds in the temple grounds, which then became widespread.
For this reason, Butsuryu-ji Temple is said to be the birthplace of Japanese tea, and the grinding mortars remain today.
This famous ancient temple has the oldest thousand year old cherry tree, and red spider lilies that blanket the stone stairway to the temple in red.
