Aburakake-Jizo

Aburakake-Jizo is enshrined in a temple that stands alone on the side of Taishimichi Road (Sujikaimichi Road), a road upon which Prince Shotoku traveled.
Aburakake-Jizo is a stone statue of a guardian deity for whom one holds a memorial service by literally sprinkling oil over it.
Hence, due to the oil, the surface of the statue has a black luster.
Various theories exist regarding the origin of the memorial service. Since oil repels water, one tradition is that, by sprinkling oil, one prays that flood damage will not occur.
Another tradition is that, by sprinkling oil, one prays for the cure of boils. Many people, not just the local people, but also people from far away, visit the jizo.
