Old Folk House of the Watanabe Family

While it is uncertain as to when this residence was built, we know from the 1725-dated ofuda talisman in Warabiku that it predates this and it is said to have been built in the 16th century.
A private residence with a thatched and half-hipped roof with its entrance running parallel to the roof’s ridge. It is the oldest in northern Kyoto Prefecture and was became a nationally-designated important cultural property in 1975.
Both its scale and outward appearance are that of a typical private residence in the Tanba area and every part of the house shows how it was made by hand to be suitable for the local climate.
The gleaming black pillars tell the story of the people who lived here for generations and leave a real impression on those who view them.
