Former Sanada Residence

Sanada Family Residence is the only surviving palace building associated with Matsushiro Castle.
During the Edo period, the sankin-kotai system required daimyo lords to travel between their domains and Edo, present-day Tokyo, while their wives and children generally lived in Edo.
When the rules were relaxed in 1862, Osada no Kata (born Sadahime and later known by the Buddhist name Teishoin) was allowed to return to Matsushiro, and this residence was built for her.
She was the widow of Sanada Yukiyoshi and the biological mother of Sanada Yukinori, the ninth lord of Matsushiro Domain.
Yukiyoshi died before becoming lord, and Yukinori later succeeded his grandfather, the eighth lord Sanada Yukitsura, as his adopted heir.
