Karasuyama Washi Kaikan

The Karasuyama Washi Kaikan introduces the Karasuyama washi, a type of Japanese paper with a long-standing history since the Nara period, which is put on display and available for purchase.
The Karasuyama washi is popular with the people; it is used for the mountain (background) of the Yamaage Matsuri festival, as well as diplomas of many schools in the country.
Additonally, the Hodomurashi, which is said to be the most valuable thick paper, has been recognized by the state as an intangible cultural asset.

This establishment was originally built as Karasuyama Hospital in 1923, and has been designated as a modernization heritage of the city.
The building's appearance is visibly influenced by the German expressionist architecture that was popular from the late Taisho era to the early Showa era, such as vertically long double-hung windows and semicircular dormer windows.
