Sokusyo-in Temple (Minamoto no Noriyori Castle Ruins)

It is said that the Sokusyo-in Temple used to be the residence of Minamoto no Noriyori (1150 - 1193), a general in the late Heian period (794–1185), who fought alongside his brothers Minamoto no Yoritomo and Minamoto no Yoshitsune in a number of battles during the Genpei War (1180–1185)*.
*A national civil war between the Taira and Minamoto clans during the late-Heian period (794–1185) of Japan.

After the Heiji Rebellion (1160), Minamoto no Noriyori fled to Mount Iwadono, where he grew up under the protection of the Hiki clan.
He continued to live in Yoshimi, in an area that came to be known as Gosho after Yoritomo gained power in Kamakura. It is said the temple was moved to this location during the Muromachi period (1336-1573).
Part of the moat built by Noriyori around his mansion surrounds the temple.
