Mihashira Jinja Shrine
The first lord of the Yanagawa Domain, Tachibana Muneshige, his father-in-law, Tachibana Doetsu, and his wife, Tachibana Ginchiyo are enshrined here.
The majestic style of the main shrine building and the lush greenery of the grounds have made this shrine one of Yanagawa’s most famous sites.
On the 16th of every month, the shrine sells a limited number of nagi leaf charms, which are made using leaves from a sacred nagi (Asian bayberry) tree found on the grounds.
The tree’s name is a homonym for other Japanese words that have meanings of calm or to rid oneself of troubles, so the charms are said to bring marital harmony and to ward off disasters.
In 2020 the 13 different charms sold at the shrine were redesigned.
