Kanmon Pedestrian Tunnel

The Kanmon Straits that separate Japan’s main island and Kyushu is the central vein of ocean transportation!
To cross the strait, The Kanmon Tunnel and the Kanmon Bridge were constructed.
Also, the Kanmon Tunnel is separated into the upper part, the lower part for cars and pedestrians.
On the lower part of the tunnel is the Kanmon Pedestrian Tunnel, where people can walk across the strait under the ocean floor.
This undersea tunnel has a total length of 780m, and you can make a trip from the main island to Kyushu in just 15 minutes.
It’s an amazing feeling to be able to walk across the sea!
At the middle of the undersea tunnel is the border between Yamaguchi and Fukuoka Prefecture, which is a recommended place to take a memorial picture.
Also, Kanmon Straits was the place where the final battle between Genji and Taira, the Battle of Dannoura, took place in 1185. The Mimosusogawa Park overlooks the old Dannoura battlefield, and you can find stone monuments/waka engraved monuments at the park remembering the battle.
When you visit Shimonoseki, please be sure to visit both the pedestrian tunnel and Mimosusogawa Park!
