Fukiya Furusato Village

Up on a plateau at an altitude of about 500 meters, a red streetscape suddenly comes into view. This is Fukiya, which once flourished as a mining town and was Japan’s top producer of copper and the pigment known as bengara.

Fukiya is designated as a Preservation District for Groups of Historic Buildings in Japan. Indeed, its streets lined with old houses with lattices, walls, and other parts in bengara red creates a truly unique streetscape that is like a time slip back to olden times.

The story of Fukiya district’s cultural properties and traditions, its historical peculiarities and charms earned its recognition as Japanese Heritage in June 2020.
