Couple Rock (Wedded Rocks)

Two magnificent natural rocks tower above a limestone plateau at an altitude of 400 meters.

The “husband” rock is 12 meters tall, while the “wife” rock is 16 meters and “holds” a rock that looks like a beloved child.
The male rock is narrower at its base and stays standing thanks to the delicate balance created by a combination of its shape and a rock beneath it that acts like a wedge.
This is a grand sight considered unrivaled in Japan.

Growing in the surrounding area are seasonal flowers and rare plants that thrive in limestone environments.
Visitors can enjoy views of the brightly colored foliage in the fall and of the clear waters of the Nariwa River below.
Two observation decks offer views of the rocks from both directions, and there is also a shrine (Oni no Mura Meoto Iwa Shrine) where visitors pray for happy marital relations, good luck in matchmaking, and safety for the family.
