Kokyo-gaien National Garden

The Kokyo-gaien National Garden was called Nishinomaru-shita in the Edo period (1603-1868).
It housed the residences of leading feudal lords and daimyos who were in charge of the shogunate. After the Meiji Restoration (1868), it was used as a government guard and military camp.
In 1949, a part of the former imperial garden was opened to the public as a national park.
There are three areas: the Imperial Palace Outer Gardens area centered on the Imperial Palace Square, the Kitanomaru area located on the north side of the Imperial Palace, and the Imperial Palace Outer Circumference area which surrounds the Imperial Palace with 12 moats.
The Imperial Palace Outer Gardens area is a harmonious combination of a large lawn and historical buildings. The moat area is designated as a "Special Historic Site of Edo Castle" and is a cultural asset.
