Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine

The history of Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine began when Minamoto no Yoriyoshi, the ancestor of Minamoto no Yoritomo, the first shogun of the Kamakura Shogunate, divided the divine spirit of Iwashimizu Hachimangu Shrine in Kyoto and enshrined it in another newly established shrine.

About 120 years later, in 1180, Yoritomo moved it to its present location, and in 1191 it assumed its present form.
After Yoritomo's death, the highest authorities of the time, including the Hojo clan, which served as regent after his death, the Ashikaga clan (the shoguns of the Muromachi period), Toyotomi Hideyoshi (the shoguns of the Azuchi-Momoyama period), and the Tokugawa clan (the shoguns of the Edo period), also repaired the building.
It is a symbol of Kamakura that has been revered throughout the ages.
