Owari-Manzai and Hachiman-jinja Shrine

This traditional art form is considered to be the origin of Kamigata manzai, the form of manzai comedy in the Kansai region.
Owari-manzai, which has been performed as a seasonal farm work during the off-season, is a nationally designated important intangible folk cultural property, in which the tayu (the serious guy), who holds a fan and chants a prayer, is interrupted by the saizo (the funny man) playing an interlude on a drum to celebrate the happiness and prosperity of the family.
It is dedicated every January 1 at Hachiman-jinja Shrine, where all the local deities are enshrined, and its inner shrine, built in 1685, is municipal cultural property.
