Yushima Seido

This Kōshi-byō (Confucian temple) was built by Hayashi Razan, a Confucian scholar in the early Edo period, in his private residence in Ueno Shinobugaoku, and was moved to this location in 1690 by Tsunayoshi, the fifth shogun of the Tokugawa Shogunate, in order to promote Confucian studies.
"Kōshi-byō" are temples dedicated to Confucius, the founder of Confucianism.
In 1797, the Shoheizaka Gakumonjo, an academy under the direct control of the shogunate, was established to the west of the temple.
The present building was reconstructed using reinforced concrete in 1935 following the Great Kanto Earthquake.
