Kaijyusenji Temple

According to the temple's records, Kaijyusenji Temple was first established in 735, when Emperor Shōmu, desiring to pray for the successful construction of a great buddha, ordered High Priest Rōben to oversee the construction of what was then known as Kannonji Temple and 11-faced Kannon statues were enshrined in the temple.
The temple was lost to fire in 1137.
Following that, in 1208, the Liberated Master Jōkei moved to the ruins of Kannonji Temple from Kasagi-dera Temple, renaming it Mount Potalaka Kaijyusenji Temple and restoring it.
The five-story pagoda (national treasure) was erected in 1214 by Jishin Shonin, and it is renowned in architectural history as its central pillar extends only to the first level.
It was diassembled and repaired in 1962, and the decorative roof on the first level of the pagoda was restored.
