Thatched Boathouse and Lake

The thatched boathouse on the shore of Lake Mikata is a rare example of a Gassho-zukuri hut interwoven with the lake.
In spring when the plum blossoms are in bloom and in winter when the lake is covered with snow, the scenery is even more beautiful and looks like a painting.

It is said that the boathouse has a long history, dating back to the Edo period.
They were used to store small boats used for farming and transporting crops to and from plum fields and rice paddies on the other side of the river.
Thatched boathouses were built because thatched roofs, with their excellent air permeability and heat insulation, had the advantage of lasting longer in the Wakasa region, where it rains and snows frequently.
Today, when boats are no longer used, they are preserved as a resource that conveys the appearance of the past.
