Kawawa Jinja Shrine

This famous shrine is featured among the 13 shrines in Sagami (former province that is now Kanagawa) in a historical list of shrines titled "Engishiki Jinmyocho," which was first compiled over 1,000 years ago in the year 927.
This shrine is also where Ninomiya-machi’s name originates, as the word "Ninomiya" was a historical designation meaning "second-highest ranked shrine."
The shrine is said to have been founded 2,000 years ago, and currently the shrine is dedicated to Ninomiya-machi’s "ujigami," which is a Shinto guardian deity for specific places and areas.
