Kobo Daishi as an infant

The temple is the 18th temple of the special 20 sacred places of Shikoku.
The Inner Sanctuary is regarded as the birthplace of Tamayori Gozen, the mother of Kobo Daishi, the founder of the Shingon sect. It is said that she set up a maternity room in this place and gave birth to Daishi.
Standing at the main gate of the Head Temple in place of the guardian gods is the unusual feature of Deva king statues modeled after Kotogahama and Daigo, local-born sumo wrestlers. The Inner Sanctuary is the only inner sanctuary in Japan whose principal object of worship is Kobo Daishi as an infant.
