Kunou-zan Tosho-gu Shrine

Kunō-zan Tōshō-gū is a beautiful shrine dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first Shogun of the Edo period.
There are many “Tōshō-gū” shrines dedicated to Ieyasu across Japan, but this Kunō-zan Tōshō-gū was the first to be built.
It was built about 400 years ago, and it is designated as a National Treasure.
Ieyasu was a figure who built the foundations of the peaceful Edo period that lasted nearly 300 years and a person who lived seventy-five years himself, which was long at the time.
As such, he is considered in Japan a symbol of peaceful living and recovery from illnesses.
Located at an altitude of 270 m, Kunō-zan Tōshō-gū’s view from the top of Mt. Kunō is famously magnificent.
You can reach this place by taking a five-minute ride on a ropeway from Nihon-daira or by walking up 1159 stone steps from the foot of the mountain.
