The Symbol of Karatsu

Karatsu Castle, a beloved symbol of Karatsu City in Saga Prefecture, was built in 1608. Terazawa Hirotaka, the first lord of the Karatsu Domain, began constructing the castle in 1602, completing it seven years later. The main keep was placed on an island called Matsuishiyama, creating a natural fortress surrounded by sea and rivers on three sides.
Nicknamed “Dancing Crane Castle” (Maizuru-jo), the castle and its surrounding pine grove and sandy beach resemble a crane with its wings spread wide.
The castle was decommissioned in 1871 during the Meiji Restoration, and the main keep site became Maizuru Park. The current five-story castle tower was rebuilt in 1966 as a cultural tourism facility and underwent renovations in July 2017.
One of the highlights is the view from the observation floor on the fifth level. On clear days, you can see as far as the Genkai Sea. Maizuru Park is also famous for its cherry blossoms and wisteria. In spring, about 1,000 cherry trees bloom, creating a stunning scenery around the castle.
Inside the castle, you can explore exhibits of Terazawa Hirotaka’s personal items and life during the Edo period. Nearby, you’ll find kilns producing Karatsu pottery, offering a taste of traditional craftsmanship. Karatsu Castle is perfect for history enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.
