Keigashima Valley・Byobu Cliff

Keigashima Valley is rich in unique landscapes formed of eroded agglomerates from Mount Ashitaka and eroded lava beds from Mount Fuji.
In this valley also stands Ekyoji, which is a temple believed to have been founded by the renowned priest Kūkai.
The canyon’s downstream has a byobu (“folding screen”) cliff, which is a beautiful, sheer cliff composed of a columnar joint set formed after magma cooled down and was compressed.
