One of the two holy places of Koyasan

Danjo Garan, along with Okunoin, is one of the two holy places of Koyasan.
Danjo Garan was the first building that Kobo Daishi (774-835) established when he opened Koyasan as a place to practice Shingon esoteric Buddhism.
The “Kondo (main hall)”, “Konpondaito” (48.5m high great pagoda) and other buildings play a central role in Koyasan and include many mandalas (geometric symbols used as an aid to meditation).
