This is a famous peony spot in Kyoto

It is the oldest temple in the Otokuni district, known to have been founded by Shotoku Taishi.
It was greatly expanded as the 7 main temples in Kyoto when Emperor Kanmu transferred the capital to Nagaokakyo.
Imperial Prince Sawara, the younger brother of Emperor Kanmu, was confined here when he was suspected of being involved in the assassination of Fujiwara no Tanetsugu.
During the Heian period, Kukai became an intendant at the order of Emperor Saga and exchanged doctrinal discussions with Saicho, who visited to talk about esoteric Buddhist teachings.
It was rebuilt in the Edo period by the 5th Shogunate Tokugawa Tsunayoshi. It is known as a “peony temple” and about 1,000 peony flowers bloom in spring.
