A dramatic gorge of strange rock formations and swift currents carved by the Yoshino River

Oboke and Koboke are scenic gorges along the middle reaches of the Yoshino River, known for their dramatic landscape of unusual rock formations and massive boulders carved by fast-flowing water.
The names are said to mean a place where a large cliff collapse seems likely in Oboke and a place where a smaller one seems likely in Koboke.
True to those names, rocks of many sizes rise in overlapping layers, conveying both the rugged terrain and the raw power of nature.
The surrounding area offers many ways to enjoy the landscape.
Sightseeing boats provide close-up views of the rocks from the river, while lookout points open onto sweeping views of the entire gorge.
The Yoshino River is also known as one of Shikoku’s wildest rivers, and the Oboke and Koboke area is especially famous as a destination for thrilling rafting and canoeing.
