Matsushiro Castle Ruins
Matsushiro Castle Ruins are the remains of a castle built during Japan's Warring States period, when regional warlords competed for power.
Takeda Shingen built the castle in preparation for incursions by Uesugi Kenshin and is traditionally said to have ordered Yamamoto Kansuke to oversee its construction.
The castle later served as a Takeda stronghold during the Battles of Kawanakajima.
Surrounded by mountains on three sides and protected by the Chikuma River, it made strategic use of the natural terrain.
The site was designated a National Historic Site in 1981 and is also known for its cherry blossoms in spring.
