A hidden valley of spectacular scenery and deep-rooted history

Iyakei Valley is a dramatic gorge known as one of Japan’s Three Hidden Regions.
Carved deep into the mountains by the Iya River, which rises in the Tsurugi mountain range, the steep V-shaped gorge is known for its striking cliffs and powerful scenery.
The landscape changes beautifully with the seasons, from fresh greenery in spring and deep green in summer to vivid autumn leaves and snow-covered views in winter, and the area also offers activities such as trekking and canoeing.
“Japan’s Three Hidden Regions” refers to some of the country’s most secluded mountain areas, known for their rugged terrain and long isolation, and Iyakei is one of them.
The valley is also tied to legends of the Heike clan, who are said to have sought refuge here after the civil wars of the late 12th century.
Nearby sights include Kazurabashi Bridge (IYA VINE BRIDGE), which spans the gorge and is designated as a National Important Tangible Folk Cultural Property, offering visitors a glimpse into the way people once lived in this area.
